Locally grown Tamarillos are in season now at the Tamarillo Trader. Paula and her daughter are new stall holders at the Market having passed the application process meeting all the requirements of being the grower with in a specified region.
The site visit to their property in Paengaroa was very interesting. Approximately half a hectare of their land has rows of tamarillo trees basking in a very sheltered spot. The day we visited the sun was out giving a beautiful warm inviting spot. The free range ‘fertilizing machines’ of chickens were very happy to come along with us as we walked around.
The family intentionally prune later to allow a later harvest of the fruit. But this season, with all the wet dull days, meant the fruit was slower to get to full maturity.
